Wareham's fashion ingenue, age five
She's taking the fashion world by storm, and she's only five-years old.
Wareham's Isabelle Tu recently won first place in the United Way of Greater New Bedford Live United Coloring Contest in the 5-to-8-year-old age group, designing a t-shirt that shows her sisters dancing with her among lots of hearts.
"I love Crazy Frog," Isabelle said, dropping the name of her inspiration, the hottest record for the pre-kindergarten set.
"She loves dancing," said Isabelle's sister, Emily, who is in the middle of the t-shirt. Their older sister Lana is on the left of the picture (while facing it) and Isabelle is on the right.
Isabelle said she wants to be an artist when she grows up because artists get to draw all day. She also enjoys playing with her dollhouse, and she has three stuffed animals to whom she is devoted. Isabelle's grandma has real bunnies, and Isabelle says they are soft like her stuffed animals.
As for her art, Isabelle has quite a portfolio. She proudly displayed the cat that she drew for the Wareham Child Care Halloween decorations hanging in the Decas School cafeteria. She says she likes drawing "flowers, people, flashlights, and trees because they have beautiful leaves."
"I make some trees," Isabelle explained, "and then I make some plants, and I eat some berries. I like a lot of berries: raspberries and blueberries."
She also likes color - her favorite colors are "purple, and green, and blue."
Isabelle is currently working on a Thanksgiving-themed project.
In fact, the project is sure to draw the attention of the art world. She radically rejects the dour, drab, and plain-clothed Pilgrim of lore in favor of a happy-go-lucky 17th-century dandy with a patchwork pink, yellow, purple and green coat.
Of course, Isabelle's art is very traditional in one way. She always stays within the lines.
But her most endearing trait is that she hasn't been affected by her success. Even a lowly art critic will be rewarded with a hug.
"She's very good at hugging," said her teacher Mrs. Betty Sobieraj.
