First Onset movie night sees big turnout

Jul 10, 2015

Mini-and adult-sized moviegoers alike crammed onto the benches of the Onset bandshell Thursday night for the summer's first free movie night in two years.

The crowd of more than 100 people watched "Alexander and the Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day," about 11-year-old Alexander, whose day starts out, well, terribly, when he awakens to find a piece of gum stuck in his hair.

The movie is part of a series put on by the Onset Bay Association and the Onset Film Festival, a new organization that wants to bring the free family movies back to Onset and also open the possibility of hosting a future film festival.

The film festival was created with the help of resident Paul Ciccotelli, who founded the Bandshell Alliance group last summer. He wants to not only draw people to Onset Village and enhance the arts and entertainment scene, but also raise money to fix up the dilapidated Onset bandshell.

The Alliance seeks to raise the $315,000 for structural, hardware, landscape, lighting and audio upgrades to the shelter, which has served the community for more than a century and was re-built in 1955.

Film Festival Chairman Carlston Woods said he thinks the movie nights are a great way for beachgoers to relax after a long day in the sun.

"Dinner at a local restaurants then finding a seat, sharing some snacks, taking in the fresh air and the company of family and friends is a great way to round out the day in this beautiful place,” Woods said.

The organization hopes the movie nights will eventually evolve into a festival that will feature both shorts and feature-length films that would be judged by experts and the public.

Free movies will be shown every Thursday evening in the summer. Gates open at 8 p.m. and the movies begin at dark. The movies presented will be as follows:

  • July 16: "Paddington"
