All aboard for the Wareham Firemen's Association train ride fundraiser
It was a near sellout crowd that enjoyed the summer sunset on a leisurely train ride down Cape Cod Friday evening for the Wareham Firemen’s Association’s Ride the Rails fundraiser.
The association partnered with the historic Cape Cod Central Railroad to rent a train for the evening and proceeds from the event went toward scholarships for graduating Wareham students. The train ride was an event the association revived after last putting it on a few years ago.
Passengers boarded the train at the Buzzards Bay train station at 5 p.m., and returned to the station at 8:30 p.m.
Association Secretary Robert Bourne said the event was almost sold out, save for three tickets, and that was only because one group of passengers couldn’t make it at the last minute.
Bourne estimated the association raised about $1,800, which included a 50-50 raffle, and ticket sales.
“When we got back, a lot of passengers asked if we were going to do it again next year,” Bourne said.
Association President Ken Jordan said the Wareham Firemen's Association is a nonprofit association made up of about 25 members from Wareham and the surrounding area that provides assistance to firemen and their families in times of need. It also provides scholarships to area high school seniors, and donates to local charities.
