Wareham High School seniors score in top 10 for AP English course

Future novelists and poets could be walking the halls of Wareham High School, as the Advanced Placement Literature classes at the school were recently ranked in the top 10 in the state, among comparable schools.

Boston-based nonprofit organization Mass Insight Education ranked the school number 10 of 176 schools in Massachusetts for AP Literature and Composition scores by low-income students. The course is taught by John Flynn, who has been teaching at Wareham High School for 15 years. Flynn said he has never seen as many students take the exam or his class as he did this past year.

“We had 45 students, and only one of them didn’t take the exam, though they could have passed,” Flynn said. “It has, in part, to do with the Mass Insight [Education] grant – they want increased participation in [AP programs] in the school.”

Flynn said the students in his class study everything from 16th century literature to modern works, such as “Beloved,” by Toni Morrison.

Wareham High School principal Scott Palladino said the rank was “obviously a tribute to [Flynn’s] professionalism.”

“While his family is on vacation, he goes to AP training courses,” Palladino said. “He is a very involved teacher, and an excellent teacher, as well.”

Though he believes the students’ instructors should be credited with giving the students the tools they need to succeed, Flynn said it is ultimately up to the students to pull themselves forward.

“These kids have to come in, work hard, and believe in the process, and themselves,” Flynn said. “They want to be successful, so it’s hats off to them.”
