Pigs putter across gymnasium at middle school's eighth annual pig race
‘Oink’ was the onomatopoeia of the day at the middle school’s now-traditional eighth annual pig race Nov. 25.
The school had 13 classrooms and six individual students racing mechanical pigs across the gymnasium. Middle school PTA president Kim Cormier said she doesn’t know how or why the tradition got started, but that it is a fun reward for the students following catalogue fundraising for the PTA through Meadow Farms.
“We award a mechanical pig to classrooms that raise $500, or have 50 percent or more classroom participation,” Cormier said. “The kids dress up … and do decorate their mechanical pigs.”
The individual winner of the pig race was Courtney Osborne, and the classroom winner was Valerie Johnson’s homeroom. The classroom that won the most spirit award was Wendy Brogioli’s homeroom.
Cormier said the students raised a total of of $7,700 for the PTA, a $1,200 leap over last year’s $6,500. All money goes towards middle school enrichment programs, and field trips, Cormier said.
