Open Space Committee details improvements to playground
The Open Space Committee reports that it has made progress on removing safety issues from some of the town’s playgrounds.
Committee members spoke with Selectmen on Tuesday night, saying they used funds provided through a Town Meeting vote a few years ago.
So far committee members have uncovered and stacked 156 tires for removal at Weweantic, replaced the seat on a bench and added three new swings at Arruda, and repaired part of the fence at Indian mound, among other projects.
In Shangri-la, hazardous wooden structures will be removed in the spring, and eventually the committee would like to build a small play area, said member Sandy Slavin.
Selectman Patrick Tropeano said the original subdivision plans may already have areas set aside for playgrounds.
Additionally, wooden pavilions at Swifts Beach will be removed, and fences will be replaced at many locations.
“I really appreciate that you guys and girls are out there doing junk work,” said Selectman Judy Whiteside. “It’s really nice to belong to a community where people will spend their time and energy making things better.”
