Election nomination papers, several seats available

Jan 22, 2016

A few contests are already shaping up for the town’s April 5 election.

With two seats on the Board of Selectmen, one on the School Committee, and four other positions scheduled to be on the ballot, candidates for election and re-election are already circulating nomination papers.

Selectmen Patrick Tropeano’s and Steve Holmes’ seats are up for re-election. Holmes has not yet indicated his intentions. Tropeano has taken out nomination papers, as has challenger John Ferranti of the East Wareham-based Ferranti Plumbing & Heating Co.

Tropeano said he believes he has been part of a board "that has accomplished so much . . . Gone is the bickering, attacks on personnel. Years of [mismanagement] have been turned around."

For School Committee, Rhonda Veugen has announced she will seek re-election. She is being challenged by Mary Morgan, listed on the Wareham schools website as a “related service provider.”

Veugen said that, as a parent of a 9-year-old, she is in a unique position to see “firsthand the accomplishments this district has achieved over the last three years.”

Town Clerk Mary Ann Silva, who has held the job for a total of more than 17 years, is seeking another 3-year term. She is facing a challenge from Loren Franklin of West Wareham.

Sewer Commissioner Marilyn Jordan is up for re-election for her seat representing sewer users. She faces a challenge from Peter Dunlop, chair of the Council of Aging, for the three-year seat.

Moderator Claire Smith has already taken out nomination papers. At present, she faces no challenge.

Also on the ballot will be the assessor’s seat currently held by Roxanne Barboza.

Nomination papers may be picked up in the Town Clerk’s office on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8:15 a.m. – 6 p.m., and Tuesdays from 8:15 a.m. – 6:30 p.m.

The deadline to take out nomination papers is Friday, Feb. 12 by 5 p.m. On that day, papers may be picked up at the Wareham Harbormaster’s Office, located in the Multi-Service Center.

Nomination papers, completed with the required number of signatures, must be turned in by Tuesday, Feb. 16, in order for a candidate’s name to appear on the ballot.
