New pizza joint to offer more than just pizza

Mar 22, 2016

Peter Zaifides has been in the pizza business for more than 40 years.

Zaifides, who will be opening Olympic Pizza and Subs at 2605 Cranberry Hwy., where Crack ‘O’ Dawn used to be, first started working with the cheesy baked goods in the 1970s, when his father hired him at age 14.

“As time went on, that was pretty much the only thing I liked to do, and I wanted to carry it on until today,” Zaifides said.

This is the third pizza shop Zaifides has owned. His first opened in West Bridgewater in 2006. From there, he moved on to Duxbury, and from there to Wareham.

Zaifides isn’t Italian, though. He’s Greek – and some of his roots will make their way onto the pizza he makes. He said one of the menu items is a Greek pizza, as well as a Greek chicken and rice soup.

That said, he doesn’t play favorites when it comes to cooking – which he will be doing in the restaurant’s kitchen.

“I really don’t have a favorite thing to make, whether it is a calzone, a pizza, or a sub,” Zaifides said.

The restaurant will operate out of the nearly 1,800-square-foot building with about four to five employees. Zaifides said he isn’t quite sure how many employees he will need yet, because the restaurant isn’t open, but plans to send out calls for hiring soon.

“We are planning to open sometime next week,” Zaifides said. “We are just waiting for inspections. To be honest, my projected date was about a month and a half ago … but you always run into some small delays.”

He said he plans to offer special opening prices for a few weeks after the restaurant opens.
