Workers picket at Wareham Verizon store

Apr 15, 2016

In an act of solidarity with others across the East Coast, workers picketed in front of the Verizon store at Wareham Crossing Friday afternoon. This is the third day of the strike, and all that's demanded is "nothing."

"We're asking for nothing," said Keeley Rigo. "If we had the same contract that we had, that expired on August 1 of 2015, we could not be out here. The company wants to keep stripping away what we already have."

Sue Mazzola, a Wareham resident and fellow striker, said that the company is uprooting technicians on short notice and sending them to different parts of the country for months on end, depending on the demand that's needed. Mazzola and Rigo hold jobs in the call center in Taunton, and they say those jobs are being outsourced. According to Mazzola, three new call centers have already been built in the Philippines.

"They're routing all of our calls there," said Mazzolla. "So if there's no job security, there's no jobs for us."

Rigo and Mazzola have been without a contract since August, and both have worked for the company for 16 and 17 years, respectively.

The picketing in the local store is a blip on the map. According to news sources, nearly 40,000 workers from Massachusetts to Virginia have walked off their jobs to strike starting on Wednesday.

The large-scale strike has made national news. Even presidential candidates have taken notice.

"It's all about a company that makes billions of dollars per year in profit," said Rigo. "If there isn't a good paying, middle class American job, who's gonna have the money to buy the goods that they're providing? Nobody."

According to the workers, they will picket in front of Verizon for "as long as it takes." Currently, they are represented by the Communications Workers of America and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

"You have to fight for what's right, you have to fight for what's just," said Rigo. "You can't just lay over and give up and just say 'It's okay, you can take everything I have, I'm gonna work for nothing.' We all have a right to fight for good paying middle class jobs."
