Bystander frees crash victim from fiery wreck in Wareham

May 8, 2016

An unidentified Good Samaritan freed a 56-year-old Mattapoisett man trapped in a flaming car following a crash in Wareham Sunday evening.

State Police responded to the exit 1 ramp heading southbound on I-495 where the driver of a 2009 Audi A4 lost control and rolled off the road. The accident was called in at 5 p.m.

A State Police spokesman said the car was on fire when a bystander pulled the driver out of the wreck. Soon after, the car became “fully engulfed in flames,” according to the spokesman.

Police said the driver was transported by helicopter to Rhode Island Hospital with serious, non-life threatening injuries.

Based on numerous eyewitness reports, police believe the man was driving erratically and fast prior to losing control.

State Police said the Good Samaritan left the scene soon after officers arrived.

Police did not release the name of the driver and were trying to determine if he was the owner of the vehicle as of this publication.
