Onset Fire to the rescue, saves mobile home
With seconds to spare, a trailer in Onset Mobile Home Park would have been engulfed in flames on Wednesday if not for the Onset Fire Department's quick response. Due to the station's proximity, only a portion of the home was damaged.
Dolores Harrington, owner of the trailer at 55 Dot's Lane, had turned her brand new stove on to make dinner. Before she knew it, it caught fire.
Harrington's daughter, Joann Bergeron, called 911 and Onset Fire responded. The fire was spreading down the hallway when firefighters arrived.
Within minutes, they had extinguished the blaze.
"Right now it would appear that some combustible stored underneath the stove ignited," said Onset Fire Chief Ray Goodwin.
Bergeron had nothing but praise for the Onset Fire Department, which was located only one-third of a mile away.
"They said two seconds later, they would've lost the whole trailer. They were amazing," said Bergeron. "They cleaned it all up. They were really nice. They were really good."
Harrington will need to install a new wall, stove, and cabinets, but her home is safe. With the electricity gone, Bergeron and Harrington packed all the things in the fridge, and Harrington will stay at her daughter's house in Falmouth.
Harrington lives in Florida for most of the year and bought the home in Onset about a year ago.
