Failure to launch: truck ends up in water

A Chevy Suburban was found in the water off of the Tempest Knob boat ramp after its brakes gave out while hauling in a small boat.

At approximately 5 p.m. on July 1, Assistant Harbormaster Jamie McIntosh was on his way home when he noticed the car in the water.

He said the operator of the vehicle jammed the gears of the vehicle while trying to haul a boat in and jumped out of the car once it entered the water.

"We usually have one or two [vehicles in the water] a season," said McIntosh. "Either they forgot to put the car in park or e-brake, or a mechanical failure."

The Wareham Fire Department, the Massachusetts Environmental Police, and the Wareham Harbormaster Department all responded to the scene.

The car was towed by Eric Griswold and Brandon Sullivan of Vaughn's Towing Service, Inc. Griswold said he swam a cable out to the vehicle, hooked it on, and towed it in.

"This kind of thing happens more often than you think," said Sullivan.

The owner of the boat and the operator of the car refused to comment or provide their names.
