Wareham police grateful for support after Dallas attack
Wareham Police were touched and humbled by an outpouring of support after a sniper attack left five Dallas, Texas officers dead on July 7.
“During the past two days, people of all ages have let officers know they appreciate what every officer strives to do every day, which is to keep Wareham as safe as possible and make our community a better place,” Police Chief Kevin Walsh posted on the department’s Facebook page on July 9.
The previous day, a different post from the department expressed gratitude and surprise at the public’s response.
“We’re not used to somewhat awkwardly searching for words of appreciation in response to those unexpected thank you’s. We’re not used to so many cards and small tokens of appreciation being brought to the station,” read a portion of the post.
After the shooting, flags across town were lowered to half mast.
The shooter, Micah Xavier Johnson, was killed following a standoff with police. Currently, authorities believe he acted alone.
The attack occurred at a Black Lives Matter protest in the wake of police shootings, one in Louisiana and another in Minnesota, that left two black men dead.
Walsh acknowledged this was a “most difficult time in Law Enforcement” in his post and thanked residents for the support.
“Your support certainly helps us realize that the mission of the Wareham Police Department is a true community effort, and that the effort must always go both ways in order to be truly effective,” wrote Walsh.
