Selectmen reprimand CEDA board member for eavesdropping

On Tuesday night, Selectmen voted to send a letter to and arrange a meeting with a Community and Economic Development board member in response to a complaint filed by the Town Administrator. They decided that the message will be clear: serve the town in a respectful manner.

Town Administrator Derek Sullivan's complaint against CEDA member Robert Brady was spurred by Brady's eavesdropping on a private conversation Sullivan was having.

The complaint was brought up two weeks ago at the previous Selectmen meeting, and the board had to decide what action to take this time around.

Though there was a moment of hesitation when the question of action was brought up, Selectman Peter Teitelbaum spoke up and suggested allowing Chair Judith Whiteside to send a letter to Brady, using words Whiteside had just spoken.

"If you do in fact love the town of Wareham and choose to serve it, then please do it in a respectful manner," said Whiteside, who was at the meeting that Brady listened in on. Whiteside said she was "beyond offended" at his actions.

Board member Alan Slavin thought the rest of the board members were not addressing the real issue by simply sending a letter reprimanding Brady.

"[These problems have] been going on a long time," he said. "There's a deeper issue that must be fixed internally."

He suggested a meeting be held between the parties to "hash it out," otherwise he saw no moving on from the issue.

Whiteside motioned to allow Attorney Richard Bowen to set up a meeting between themselves, Sullivan and Brady, which the board approved.
