Gateway Babe Ruth all star teams headed to state championships
Two Gateway Babe Ruth all star teams are making deep runs in post season play and will compete in the state championships on July 16.
The 14- and 15-year-old all star teams recently earned district championships. The players will face other teams from across the state in the new baseball complex at Boston College High School in Dorchester. The 14-year-olds compete at 2 p.m. and the 15-year-olds play at 5 p.m.
Gateway Babe Ruth Regional League President Mike Messina urged residents to support the teams.
“There is a lot at stake here for the boys, including not only the crown of being a state champion, but an invitation to the Northeast Regionals starting on July 22,” said Messina.
The all star teams started out against a field of 54 contenders. Now there are six teams left.
Messina, a Wareham resident, started the league six years ago to provide more playing opportunities for South Coast players. He said the championship run is a testament to the dedication of players, parents and volunteers.
“This is truly a huge accomplishment for both teams and our program,” said Messina. “Twenty-eight players from our league are part of something that millions of players from all over the country have never reached.”
