Wareham, Onset firefighters battle brush fires that started at same time
Dry weather and one unfortunate bird helped spark two, unrelated brush fires near Charge Pond Road at approximately the same time on July 26.
Wareham, Onset, Plymouth and Department of Conservation and Recreation personnel responded to the fires just before 1 p.m.
Wareham Assistant Fire Chief Patrick Haskell said the different departments were called due to the conditions.
“It’s been extremely, extremely dry. The fire danger is way up there,” said Haskell. “We called in a lot of resources because we didn’t want either one intensifying.”
One fire occurred near the high-tension telephone wires on Charge Pond Road. According to Haskell, it appeared a bird was the cause of that fire after it landed on the wire, was electrocuted, and was smoldering as it hit the ground.
The second fire was deep in the woods just south of the Myles Standish State Forest near South Line Road.
Haskell said it’s unknown what started that fire, which burned half an acre.
“We just don’t know, it wasn’t near any power lines or a campground. It was in the middle of the woods,” he said.
Haskell said residents should take extra care with any open flames due to the lack of rainfall.
“People should be very, very cautious when using fire until we get a substantial rainfall,” said Haskell.
