Life at the fair: Onset Family Carnival returns

Aug 9, 2016

The Onset Family Carnival provided plenty of entertainment during its week-long at Lopes Field.

The carnival is open on Lopes Field from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. until Friday, Aug. 12, and a portion of the proceeds will benefit both the Onset Bay Association and the Wareham Boys and Girls Club.

Some rides include the sizzler, the round up, swings, the crazy bus, a kiddie-coaster, and more. There are also plenty of carnival games, as well as fried dough and drinks.

Visitor Elizabeth O'Connell said the carnival is “something to do with the kids,” and said she got two-and-a-half-hours worth of rides and entertainment after buying a pack of tickets.

Sonny Smith from Louisville, Kentucky, a worker at the carnival, said he's been working at the carnival for more than three decades. Since then, he's seen rides improve, games improve employees get more training, etc.

The success of the carnival depends significantly on the weather, he said. On rainy days, the carnival loses money. Other factors include advertising and the area where the carnival stops.

“It takes a special person to be out here,” he said. “You got to love being with people, because that's what it’s all about, showing the families that come out here a good time.”

The carnival workers themselves are “like a family,” said Smith. Joking around with each other, eating together, traveling with each other... throughout it all, “we all stick together,” said Smith.

During the year, Smith runs a carpet cleaning business. But for the carnival season, he travels with Cushing on its tours up north.

The work isn't easy, he said. Sometimes, the workers only get a couple hours of sleep before they have to transport the carnival to another location.

After Friday, the carnival will pack up and set up on Martha's Vineyard.
