Wareham restaurant sells $1 million lottery ticket

Christopher Park is a much richer man following his purchase of a $20 lottery ticket last week from Vel's Restaurant. The Rochester resident took a chance and won the 29th $1 million prize in the Massachusetts State Lottery’s “40th Anniversary Millions” instant game.

“It’s pretty cool. He’s a regular customer, a nice fellow. I’m glad he won the money,” said Carl Bump, who owns Vel’s along with his two brothers.

Bump said the restaurant wasn't aware of Park's winning ticket at the time. The owner found out on Tuesday morning, but it’s not the first big ticket to come out of his restaurant.

Several years ago someone else won $1 million, and there has been at least one $10,000 lottery winner.

Generally, Bump said customers purchase a few thousand lottery tickets a month. Once word gets out about Park’s win, however, Bump knows from experience that it will affect lottery ticket sales at Vel’s.

“It’s human nature,” he said. “You’ll see a spike in it right now.”

As for Park, according to the Massachusetts State Lottery, he chose the cash option for his prize, receiving a one-time payment of $650,000 (before tax withholdings). Apparently he isn’t planning to go for broke either. The Lottery reports that Park plans to deposit his six figures in a savings account.

In addition to Park's win, Vel’s also gets a $10,000 bonus for selling the ticket.
