Sewer Commissioners consider 'clarifiers' to reduce smell

Hoping to reduce odors coming from the Water Pollution Control Facility in the future, facility Director Guy Campinha will request a $800,000 transfer from one of the facility’s line items to its operating budget at Town Meeting in October.

Campinha said the money would be used to draft design plans for the installation of “clarifiers” at the sewer plant.

“Clarifiers remove solids from the system,” explained Campinha to the Sewer Commissioners on Thursday. “Primary treatment is very important.”

Final approval will have to come from voters who attend Town Meeting in October.

The Sewer Commissioners OK’d the request, which Campinha originally made earlier this month. Commissioners waited on the approval to ensure enough money was in the Retained Earning Account to cover the transfer.

According to Campinha, clarifiers significantly reduce odors.

Neighbors of the sewer plant recently filed a complaint with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, saying over the past two years the facility’s stench has become unbearable at times.

The problem is an open air basin at the plant that fills with sewage during peak use. Campinha said the clarifiers, if installed, would replace the basin.

In related news, the Sewer Commissioners approved asking for a $175,000 transfer from the Retained Earning Account to the operating budget for additional holding tanks at the sewer plant.

If approved, the funds would be used to purchase two, 20,000 gallon tanks that would relieve pressure on the basin during heavy use.
