Students head back to school

Aug 29, 2016

First day jitters? No way!

At least not for Nicholas Backlund, a third grader at Minot Forest Elementary School, who was so excited for his first day of school that he wanted to dress up with a tie and button down shirt.

“It's going to be too hot for that,” said his mother, Melissa Backlund, who allowed him to wear a button up shirt with shorts for the day, but no tie. The two, along with a few other families, were waiting outside of the school for the doors to open at 8:25 a.m.

Students from the middle school, Wareham High School, Minot Forest Elementary School, and John W. Decas Elementary School all returned to school on Aug. 29, some a little sooner than others.

Half an hour early, the kids waiting outside of Minot Forest had different reasons for being excited for school. Third grader Elijah Key wanted to see his friends again. Dashawn Marshall, another third grader, were eager to to see their teachers.

The sentiment went both ways, too. The new principal of Wareham Middle School, Dr. Peter Steedman, stood outside the doors of the school, greeting his new students and shaking their hands. He paid careful attention to their names and welcomed them back with a smile.

“The kids are buzzing,” he said before going inside after the last bus arrived.

There will be no school this coming Friday or next Monday in observance for Labor Day. Kindergarteners begin school on Sept. 6.
