Junk dealers will have 30 days to comply with a bylaw passed last year or face stiff fines for ignoring the law.

On Tuesday, Selectmen expressed frustration at the number of business owners that have not applied for a junk dealer’s license with estimates reaching as high as 60.

A revised junk dealer bylaw was passed at Fall Town Meeting last year. Under the bylaw, businesses that accept and resell used or refurbished must go through an application process. Licenses cost $150 annually.

The fine for non-compliance costs a business operating without a license $100 a day.

Selectmen voted unanimously to send a letter to the business owners without licenses that gives 30 days notice to submit applications and pay the fee or face fines.

“Given the scope of the problem businesses will have 30 days to comply or they will start seeing citations,” said Selectman Peter Teitelbaum.

Selectman Alan Slavin said the board had to act or business owners would continue to ignore the law.

“We have to make a decision, are we going to enforce the rules or eliminate them?” Slavin asked.
