Wareham High School Diversity Club created
Two Wareham High School students received approval from the School Committee on Wednesday to start the district’s newest group - a Diversity Club.
Seniors Kali Fernandes, who has a Haitian background, and Shamika Erasme, who said she is Cape Verdean and Wampanoag, said the community’s diversity should be celebrated.
“Growing up in Wareham allowed us to be open minded and not judge people on how they look,” said Erasme.
“It made us appreciate how diverse the school is,” said Fernandes.
So far, the group has held four meetings that roughly 12 students attended. The meetings start with watching a video or an activity that is then discussed. Already, the group has tackled cultural appropriation, Latino identification and stereotypes.
According to the club’s mission statement, it intends to: “empower our members to be aware they are important and that they can contribute to our community in a positive way.”
