Wareham students pick Clinton in mock election

Nov 8, 2016

Although not yet old enough to have their votes decide who will be the next president, Wareham High School students got a sense of democracy in action during a mock election on Nov. 7.

Students in the American Politics class sponsored the election. In total, 353 ballots were cast translating into a 70.6 percent participation rate among the student body.

Prior to voting, which included an electronic option this year, students heard bios on the candidates and their stance on issues during morning announcements.

American Politics teacher Matthew Stanton said the mock election got students talking.

“You’d hear about it in the hallways, in the cafeteria, just walking around,” said Stanton. “It was interesting to hear what the students were commenting on… They’re definitely learning about candidates and that makes an impact on how they vote.”

The election itself was mostly done electronically, with all students having the option of casting votes on new laptops issued at the start of the school year.

Regarding the turnout percentage, Stanton said, “We didn’t make students vote. We would have liked to have 100 percent, but generally we were pleased with the level of participation.”

And now for the results: Hilary Clinton won with 45.9 percent of total votes; Donald Trump came in second with 29.2 percent of the vote; Green-Rainbow Party candidate Jill Stein came in third with 12.7 percent of the vote and Libertarian Party candidate Gary Johnson was fourth with 11 percent of the vote.
