Borders in Wareham Crossing to close up shop
Feb 17, 2011
Borders books in Wareham Crossing will be closing its doors sometime in April.
Borders Group Inc. announced it will close 200 stores in total after it filed for bankruptcy on February 16. The company explained that the "rapidly changing" retail environment for books and music prompted the company to reorganize on its public information website.
"We haven't got specific dates on when stores will close, but it will be within the next several weeks," stated Jeremy Fielding, a representative for Borders Group Inc. He noted that all the stores marked for closure will likely be shut down by the end of April.
"There are a lot unknowns at this point," David Fleming the Director of Marketing at Wareham Crossing said about the future of the location. "It was no surprise Borders was filing for bankruptcy and closing stores, but we didn't know Wareham Crossing was on the list until we saw the list" of closures.
Fleming added that he is confident the 25,000 square foot building will be rented out. "We have already received some calls from retailers," he said late last week.
T.J. Maxx replaced Linens n' Things in a similarly-sized space in Wareham Crossing last year. Fleming said the process of finding a new renter and signing a lease took about 10 months in that case.
The Wareham Crossing Borders currently employs 29 workers. The location is one of six the company will close in Massachusetts. Stores in Boston, Burlington, Holyoke, Hyannis, and Peabody are also slated for closure.
