Vikings football to wrap up on Thanksgiving Day
A new football coach, a broken school record, and a winning (7-3) season: the Vikings had a lot going on this season, and it will come to an end on Thanksgiving Day in a game against rival Bourne.
That game will be played at Spillane Field at 10 a.m.
After notching losing seasons for the past two years, the stage for a successful season this year was set up perfectly, according to Wareham High School Principal Scott Palladino.
“We knew we would have a good team,” said Palladino. “They've been playing freshmen and sophomores for the past couple of years.”
The players had time to grow and mature together as a team, and some came out as shining stars this season. That includes junior Isaac Nascimento, who broke the school record for the most touchdowns scored in a game.
He said the accomplishment was “very surprising” and that he gives “props to [his] team for helping [him] out with that.”
“The first two years we couldn't get things rolling,” said Nascimento. “This year, everything just started working for us.”
Nascimento credits the coaching staff, claiming the discipline this year helped shaped the team with a “whole new system.”
The Vikings brought on a new football coach, Bob Lomp, at the beginning of the school year.
In the 19 years that Lomp coached the Apponequet Regional High School team, he never had a losing season. Lomp continued this record with the Vikings, turning their losing streak into a winning one. The feat didn't go unrecognized.
In October, Lomp was honored as Football Coach of the Week by the New England Patriots. The football program received a $1,000 donation on behalf of the New England Patriots Charitable Foundation in honor of Coach Lomp.
For the school – players, teachers, students, and faculty – winning games is enough of a reward in itself.
“At school, after a win, everybody is saying 'good job,' giving us high fives, even the teachers,” said Nascimento. “It's a whole different feeling from last year.”
In addition to the broken school record and Lomp's award, this was the first year the Vikings made the playoffs as one of the top teams in the league.
“We're in the winner's bracket,” said Palladino. “It's the first time in three years we've done that.”
It's a new beginning for the team and one that will, hopefully, continue. Palladino said the school is “looking forward to another good year.”
Nascimento said he hopes to end this season on a memorable note for the seniors and that each game is dedicated to Trey Miranda, an Onset teen who passed away earlier this year to brain cancer.
"Team Trey. We do it for our brother who passed away," he said.
