Vikings escape cold for Florida basketball tournament

Usually, a trip to Florida in winter is for sightseeing, relaxation and fun in the sun. The Wareham boys basketball team has something else on its mind – it wants to win.

As of Wednesday, the team is off to a good start after defeating Berry High School of Berry, Alabama, 78-40 during its first match in the KSA Events Holiday Basketball Tournament.

“It’s a great opportunity for them to test their skills against other teams from across the country,” said Coach Steve Faniel. “This is also a chance for them to showcase their talents and bond as a team.”

Held in Orlando, Florida from Dec. 28 through Dec. 30, the tournament gives student-athletes a forum to test themselves against similarly skilled competitors. While there, the Vikings will play three games whose outcomes affect the team’s season record.

With Wednesday morning’s win, the team’s record is now 3-3. Despite the Vikings’ rocky start, Faniel noted that the losses were all by a margin of 6 points or less.

“I think we’re getting better,” said Faniel. “This is a new group of kids, and we’re trying to take it one game at a time and stay positive and convey to the kids that we’ve had a tough schedule so far.”

With four seniors and three freshmen on the varsity squad, Faniel hopes the trip will let players bond, despite the age difference.

“We have more of an age mix now than in the past. I think it’s important for them to spend some time together off the court, get some experience, and support each other,” said Faniel.

Getting to the tournament took a huge effort from players and the community at large. Over the past six months, the Vikings raised close to $30,000 for plane tickets, lodging and other expenses.

“We’ve had great support from parents, some family members that made a fundraising committee, the coaching staff and the athletic director all have been instrumental in helping us,” said Faniel.

The Vikings next tournament game is against Mount Dora Christian Academy of Mount Dora, Florida on Thursday. Tip-off is at 10:15 a.m.

On Friday, the team plays its final tournament game starting at 1:45 p.m. The team’s opponent is yet to be determined.
