A Boston man facing his fifth operating under the influence charge was found hiding in the woods by a state police helicopter after a car crash in Wareham.

Around 8 p.m. on Dec. 31, Trooper Austin Dooley of the State Police Barracks in Bourne responded to the single-car crash on Route 25’s eastbound onramp.

Dooley found the car, a blue 2000 Nissan Quest, unattended with two different registration plates attached.

According to police, eye-witnesses offered a description of the man saying he fled into the woods. State Police officers from Troop D, Airwing and K9 units, along with Wareham Police, were called in to search for the driver, who police identified as John Layton, 45, of Boston.

The helicopter flight crew located Layton lying face down about 30 feet away from the tree line using a thermal imaging device. With assistance from the flight crew, troopers were led to Layton’s position where he was arrested.

Layton was then taken to State Police barracks in Bourne where he was booked and charged with the following:

Operate motor vehicle with license revoked

OUI liquor, fifth offense

OUI while license suspended for OUI

Attaching plates

Unregistered motor vehicle

Larceny under $250

Receive stolen property under $250

Leave scene of property damage

Negligent operation of a motor vehicle

Layton was taken to the Plymouth House of Corrections where he will be held pending his arraignment in Wareham District Court on Tuesday.

State Police said no further information about the incident is available.
