Spring is sprouting!
Before you seriously consider packing up a moving van in search of warmer weather, take a look around at some signs of spring, Wareham style.
The available plots at the Wareham Community Gardens on Tihonet Road are nearly all booked by gardeners eager to begin preparations for summer cultivation. A Great Blue Heron was seen flying over Onset Bay this week. Atlantic Boats is scheduling boats for an early April launch. Main Street's M&D's Bait and Tackle is stocking shelves with fishing gear. And warm-weather Marion Road hot spot Kool Kone will open for the season on Monday.
Another telltale sign that spring is on the way?
“This month we put away the snow shovels,” said Kevin Simoneau, Assistant Manager at Ace Hardware in Onset. The store is stocking up on fertilizer, seeds, and other lawn care items.
“As soon as March kicks up, the people come back. We already have a lot of the stuff,” Simoneau said.
Cheri Ikasalo, of the Wareham Garden Club, confirms we will start to see greenery soon. “Even though we had a bad winter, things seem to be holding up,” she said. According to the club, March is a good time to get growing, and an excellent time to start planting pansies and vegetables like peas, spinach, and lettuce.
The reappearance of wildlife is another reason to rejoice. According to the Massachusetts Audubon Society, purple finches have already begun singing their spring songs. In the next several weeks, the community can look forward to warm days that will bring flights of mourning cloak butterflies.
Wareham’s seasonal businesses are also getting into the swing of spring.
“In February we start thinking 'spring,'” explained owner of Atlantic Boats John Cornish. “When the weather turns, we’re rocking and rolling.”
Atlantic Boats stores hundreds of boats during the winter months. The crew has been tuning engines, waxing hulls, and making repairs in preparation for its first scheduled boat launch on April 1.
With boating comes the start of another warm weather staple: fishing.
“Inventory starts in February and March,” said Barbara Thomas, manager of M&D's Bait & Tackle on Main Street. The staff is beginning to stock shelves with poles, custom lures, and buckets in anticipation for the shop to resume full-time hours in April, just in time for eager fishermen to get their start.
While many local businesses are getting geared-up for spring, at least one local shop is thinking summer. Kool Kone in Wareham will reopen on Monday, March 7.
“We passed inspection, we’re turning on the freezers and cleaning up,” said owner Tom Strom. The store will kick off the season carrying the 15 most popular flavors of ice cream before stocking the freezers with all the varieties the store typically offers. Strom says he has already started preparing homemade treats, such as clam cakes, as well.
March 20 may be the official start of spring, but for those of us trapped in the "winter will not end" mindset, rest assured that the unofficial start is certainly underway in Wareham.
