Upper Cape's budget formula called into question

Feb 2, 2017

Fed up with what he called inequity between how funds are allocated between Wareham Public Schools and Upper Cape Cod Regional Technical High School, School Committee member Dr. Cliff Sylvia called on his board to address the issue.

“We are saddled with being outmaneuvered or outbid by Upper Cape consistently,” Sylvia said on Wednesday. “As we go forward, we should discuss a policy that would be in tune with whatever increases or decreases is in the Upper Cape budget…We would then be at the same place as Upper Cape in per pupil spending.”

Sylvia requested that the discussion be placed on the agenda for the committee’s next meeting, set for Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. in the Wareham Middle School auditorium. Committee Chair Mel Lazarus agreed to the request.

In response, committee member Geoff Swett said the discussion is unnecessary because Upper Cape is a regional school and any changes Wareham proposes would impact the four other towns the school receives funding from. Swett said coordinating that would be difficult, if not impossible.
