The Onset/Marion Flotilla 63 of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary is offering an introductory boating class for new boaters and experienced boaters looking for a review.

Classes will be held on Thursday nights from 7 to 9 p.m. Classes will be held at the Marion Recreation Department at 13 Atlantis Drive, Marion.

The course will cover all of the questions of introductory boating, including:

• Why should I take a boating safety course?
• Why do I need a safety checklist?
• I want to buy a boat - which boat is best for me?
• How much equipment do I need?
• I have a cell phone - why do I need a marine radio?
• If I swamp my boat, what do I do?
• Do I really need to wear a lifejacket?
• What are the major causes of accidents on the water? How do I avoid them?

Registration and classes will begin on Wednesday, March 1, at 7 p.m. The course is intended for the first-time boater but also a great review for the more experienced boaters. Subjects which will be covered include choosing the right boat, boat trailering and handling, and required rules. A fee of $40 per student is required for course materials.
