Scholarship recipients successful in college
All Wareham High School 2005 and 2006 recipients of Nye Scholarship Fund awards maintained a "B" average in college and graduated in four years.
Superintendent Dr. Barry Rabinovitch said he recently received the news of the grads' success. "It just shows that when they get to school, they are prepared," he said.
This group of students - 14 in total - maintained on average between a 3.3 and 3.6 grade point average, according to Rabinovitch. Each was awarded the $2,000 per academic year maximum for the scholarship.
Among the schools the students attended were Northeastern University, Boston College, Boston University, Quinnipiac University, Bridgewater State University, and UMASS Amherst and Dartmouth.
The scholarship "really helps kids go to the schools that they want to go to and cuts down on their loans," the superintendent said.
The Nye scholarships are given to seven Wareham graduates per year based on academic merit and financial need. The students must submit grade reports to the Nye fund each year to ensure they remain eligible for the scholarship. The final results are provided to the school district, helping it track how some of its students are performing in college, which Rabinovitch said administrators are working to determine for all recent graduates.
Rabinovitch said he hopes that the success of their peers will help students realize that hard work and dedication to education will pay off.
"If a student and the student's family are motivated, value education, and work hard, [students] can get into any university in the country, and do well when they get there because they are well-prepared," he said. "There's nothing to limit you if you want to work hard."
Roughly $250,000 in various types of scholarship funding is awarded to Wareham High School graduates on a yearly basis, Rabinovitch said.
