Velia Sanborn, 93
Velia (Letteri) Sanborn, 93, of East Wareham, died peacefully March 28 at the home of her daughter, Laureen Brenton.
Born in Sulmona, Italy, she was the daughter of the late Laura (Signorelli) Letteri and Louis Letteri. A graduate of North Quincy High in 1940, Velia was a previous resident of Quincy and a 40-year resident of Braintree.
Velia was a multi-talented mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to many. She had a wide and varied career including in banking and as a hair dresser, a baker of unique pastries from the Abruzzi region of Italy, a restaurant manager and a health care worker. She was a past member of the Sons of Italy in Braintree and served many years as its treasurer. In retirement, she operated a popular senior tour program and was the special events coordinator for the Bridgewater Senior Center. Her out of state travel included bus trips to Connecticut, Florida, the Carolinas, Louisiana and many other locations. She was also an active member of the Wareham Senior Center assisting the center to raise funds for special programs. Velia also loved to be at the beach sitting under an umbrella on a warm, sunny summer day.
Survivors include her daughter, Laureen Brenton and her husband Roy Brenton of East Wareham, her sons Robert Sanborn and his wife Tarry Hum of New York, and Louis Sanborn and his wife Anne Sanborn of Tennessee. Velia also had six grandchildren, Malcolm, Kaela, Shawni, Christopher, Cory, and Tara and four great-grandchildren, Rosaleen, Hayden, Lacey, and Nayshawn. She was predeceased by her brother Anthony Letteri.
A memorial celebrating Velia’s life will be held on Friday, April 21 at 10 a.m. at St Patrick’s Church, 82 High St., Wareham, MA 02571. There will be refreshments in the hall adjacent to thec immediately after the service. Graveside services in Braintree at the Blue Hill Cemetery will be private.
