Wareham Payless to close as company files for bankruptcy
Payless ShoeSource in Wareham Crossing is one of 11 Massachusetts-based stores the discount footwear chain will close after the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Tuesday.
All together, nearly 400 stores throughout the country will be shuttered as part of the company’s reorganization. Founded in 1956, the company has more than 4,400 stores across the world.
Part of the reason for filing bankruptcy is increased competition from online retailers. In a press release issued by Payless, company CEO Paul Jones said, “This is a difficult, but necessary, decision driven by the continued challenges of the retail environment, which will only intensify.”
When exactly Wareham’s store will be closed is unclear.
“We do not have effective closure dates because it will vary store to store depending on the liquidation process,” said Payless spokeswoman Meghan Spreer.
Spreer noted that a third party has been hired to oversee that process and “that oversight will include specific discounting and promotional plans.”
The other Massachusetts Payless ShoeSource store locations set to close are as follows:
Kingston Collection, Kingston
Berkshire Mall, Lanesboro
Shoppes at Blackstone Valley, Millbury
Market Basket Plaza, Raynham
Eastfield Mall, Springfield
The Center At Hobbs Brook, Sturbridge
Walpole Mall, East Walpole
Westford Valley Marketplace, Westford
Greendale Mall, Worcester
