Saturday’s Wareham Fire District election was a quiet affair as only 74 people cast ballots.

With no contested races, the sun shining on a beautiful day and Easter the next day, voters had few reasons to visit the polls in the Wareham Water Department.

Incumbent candidates Rick England and John English were returned to their seats on the Prudential Committee and the Board of Water Commissioners, respectively. England received 67 votes while English earned 63. Clerk/Treasurer Wendy Lemieux said the remaining ballots were either blank or included write-ins.

Per district bylaws, the election is always held the third Saturday in April, even if that conflicts with the Easter holiday.

England was on hand for the final vote tally after polls closed at 4 p.m. Despite the lack of competition, he campaigned lightly, putting out signs at a few locations in town.

When the results were official, England thanked those who voted for him and touched on the sleepy election.

“We’re back to the status quo,” he said.

England mentioned the light participation likely couldn’t be helped with many preparing for Easter.

The Wareham Fire District supplies water and fire protection for much of Wareham. A separate Onset Fire District performs the same function in Onset. Separate from the Town of Wareham, the Fire District is overseen by an elected five-member Prudential Committee. The district sets the water rates and allocates funds for the Fire Department.
