Wareham Community Pathway to begin construction in 2022
Plans for a bike path through on Minot Avenue pedaled forward Tuesday night after Selectmen officially authorized proponents to move ahead with an engineering study.
Michael Langford, chairman of the Wareham Bike Path Committee, appeared before Selectmen and said the path’s route along Minot Avenue will be examined. Dubbed the Wareham Community Pathway, it would serve as a link in a series of bikeways stretching from Fairhaven to Cape Cod.
The planned route initially would have wound through Wareham from Marion to Bourne, however property issues have stalled that plan. Although, the section near Minot Avenue has been approved for funding by the state, said Selectman Alan Slavin.
The committee has been working on the path for more than a decade, and in 2011 Town Meeting voters approved spending $200,000 to cover the cost of the design. In total, the Minot Avenue section will cost an estimated $3.8 million to complete with 90 percent of the bill being covered by state and federal funds, leaving the town to pay for approximately $385,000.
Slavin said the state OK’d the project to begin construction in 2022.
