Joseph Souza, 81

Jul 15, 2017

Joseph “Joel” Adelino Souza, born on Oct. 10, 1935 in Jersey City, New Jersey, passed away on July 11.

He grew up in Onset, where he started working in a bakery at the age of 10. He graduated from Wareham High School in 1954, an all-state half-back on the football team. Upon graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy and attained the rank of aviation electricians mate senior chief. He was proud to be a decorated NCCS Naval counselor prior to retirement, helping young recruits learn about the benefits of military service. Retiring after 21 years in the Navy, he earned an associate’s degree from Tidewater Community College and then joined the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and attained the position of supervisor.

Joel’s passion throughout his life was fishing, cooking for family and friends and shooting the breeze. He became a gardener of tomatoes, squash and collards, which he often gave away. Food was the means for Joel to show his generosity and love. He often cooked for the crew at Norfolk Marine Inc. who took care of the many boats he owned over the years. Joel could often be found at Scandals on Holland Road where Mike and Layla hosted many a party for friends. He was the wizened old owl who would dispense advice and concern to anyone who had the wisdom to ask his advice. He will be missed by his many friends and family. He lived a full life.

Joel is predeceased by his parents, Mary and Adelino Souza; his brother, Thomas Souza; and his daughter, Sandra Jean Souza. He is survived by his sons, Joel David Souza and Steven Thomas Souza; daughter, Jean Marie Souza; grandson, Ian Souza Senne; granddaughter, Cecilia Jade Souza; and sibling, Joanne Souza Senna.

A celebration of life will be held at Scandals, 3501 Holland Road #113, Virginia Beach, Virginia on July 22 at 5 p.m. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com.
