2 Wareham players headed to National Youth Baseball Championships
The New England Buccaneers baseball team, which includes two Wareham players, will look to bring a national title to Massachusetts after earning a spot in the 2017 National Youth Baseball Championships July 24-30 at Baseball Heaven in New York.
Connor Reidy and Riley Thornell of Wareham are both on the team. The players competed on a 13U baseball team last year that earned a World Series Championship at Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.
The National Youth Baseball Championships will be televised worldwide on CBS Sports Network and streamed online at MLB.com. The event brings together the nation’s top teams in the 9U-14U age divisions to crown national champions.
“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for most of these guys and they have worked really hard for the chance to win a national title. I couldn’t be more proud of them,” said Coach Chris Thornell, Riley’s father.
More than 70 teams are making the trip to Baseball Heaven in Long Island after qualifying for this year’s National Youth Baseball Championships. Along with the team competition in six age divisions, the week will also feature an opening ceremony, home run derby, skills competitions and a Festival Day on July 28. The Festival Day includes games, contests, music, and an All-Star Game. Athletes and families will also get the opportunity to learn from former Major League Baseball managers and players.
