Wareham Gateman earns Cape League batting award
Wareham Gateman Tanner Dodson was this year's recipient of the Cape Cod Baseball League’s Thurman Munson Batting Champion Award. This is the third consecutive year a member of the Gatemen has won the award.
A resident of Elk Grove, California, and University of California-Berkley student, Dodson arrived in the league as a pitcher. This season, he played in 29 games, batting .365 with one home run, 14 RBI and 10 multi-hit games.
The Gatemen outfielder also came out of the bullpen for Wareham, posting a 3.69 ERA in 24.1 innings pitched. He was originally listed as a pitcher coming into the league but found his way with his bat.
Dodson was the starting left fielder in the 2017 Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star Game. He will continue on as a two-way player at UC Berkley next spring.
Dodson was drafted in the 31st round of the 2015 MLB First Year Player Draft by the New York Mets.
The Cape Cod Baseball League is recognized as one of the best amateur summer leagues in the country by college coaches and professional baseball scouts. Players from across the USA and representing all college divisions are recruited to play in the 10-team league every summer.
