Retail development construction underway at Wareham Marketplace

AutoZone, ALDI first tenants

Progress on a new commercial development in West Wareham is steadily moving along as another retail tenant has been announced, car parts and accessories seller AutoZone.

The J. Donegan Company, a Virginia-based development firm, is currently building the 46,000-square-foot mixed-use commercial center at the intersection of Cranberry Highway and Tobey Road.

Jay Donegan, the company’s owner, said AutoZone will join discount supermarket chain Aldi in the center, which has been named Wareham Marketplace.

Donegan said opening those businesses marks the project’s first phase.

“There will be several other tenants joining Aldi and AutoZone, and we’re still marketing the project actively in the community and region,” said Donegan.

No definitive grand opening for either store has been set. However, Donegan estimated that both would likely open before the end of this year.

Donegan said his company is currently searching for more tenants.

“We’re seeking other, high quality retailers and restaurants for Wareham Marketplace,” said Donegan. “We’re hoping to put together a good mix of quality tenants together for the community.”

In the meantime, Aldi has already put the call out for employees. The chain has held one job fair this month and a second is scheduled for Sept. 16. For more information on applying and qualifications, see Page 20.

Regarding AutoZone, it’s unclear at this time if the town’s current store, located at 2991 Cranberry Highway, is moving or if a second store will be opening in Wareham.

Calls and emails to AutoZone seeking comment were unreturned.

Wareham Marketplace will be located across the street from Wal-Mart, which opened in 2015 after moving from its location in East Wareham.

Four buildings are proposed for the site. Plans also call for the creation of a parking lot with 318 spaces. Access will be provided by three driveways on Tobey Road and Cranberry Highway.
