This year’s 12th annual Kayak Poker Run was held two months later than planned as the original date was cancelled due to thunderstorms, but according to organizers it was worth the wait.

“We couldn’t have asked for a better day, weather wise,” said Onset Bay Association President Kat Jones. “It’s absolutely perfect.”

Held Saturday, the event started and ended at Shell Point as 25 kayakers stopped at different checkpoints set up around Onset Bay. At each checkpoint, kayakers grabbed a playing card. At the end of the run, the poker hands were ranked and prizes handed out.

Jones said the run brought just under $1,000 in to benefit the Onset Bay Association. The group hosts several events in the summer and fall such as concerts, Illumination Night and kid-friendly festivals.

“This will allow us to keep the lights on in the office for the next couple months,” she joked.

After prizes were handed out for best hands, Patrick Marshall, who helped orchestrate the event and was in charge of water safety, handed out the remaining prizes for categories made up on the fly, such “darkest sunglasses,” “who travelled the farthest for the run,” and “newest Onset Bay Association member.”
