There’s a good chance a school record will fall on Sept. 8 when the Wareham Vikings take on the Old Rochester Bulldogs in the season’s first football game.

Standout running back, senior and now captain Isaac Nascimento is one touchdown shy of matching the school’s career record of 35, set by Darien Fernandez who played from 2009 to 2012.

But Nascimento says he’s not counting. Instead, he’s focused on helping his team. He said his personal goal for the season is simple: “Just win.”

“It’s not about how many touchdowns I can score or how many yards I run,” he said. “It’s about doing the best I can on every play and getting that win as a team.”

Nascimento is returning one year after Head Coach Bob Lomp led the team to an 8-3 record and a South Coast Conference Division B co-championship.

The turnaround, coming off a 4-7 showing in the 2015 season, was recognized by the New England Patriots when the organization named Lomp its high school coach of the week.

Before coming to Wareham, Lomp was head coach at Apponequet for 14 years.

Lomp’s coaching style has been a big part of the team’s recent success, said Nascimento.

“He knows how to turn nothing into something,” Nascimento said. “He believes in us.”

Lomp said he is looking to Nascimento for team leadership.

“We’re looking for big things from him this year,” said Lomp.

Supporting Nascimento on the field are a “nice complement” of backs, according to Lomp.

They include power back and sophomore Dylan DeWolfe and Elijah McAllister, who switches between running back and wide receiver.

The problem for the team this year will be depth and a grueling non-conference schedule, said Lomp.

“We’ve got to keep the kids healthy,” he said. “You’re only as good as the second guy that comes in, a lot of the time.”

The Wareham Vikings take the field on Sept. 8 at Spillane Field against Old Rochester. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
