Wareham Community Television looked back on another year of operating as Wareham's local TV station on Wednesday at the annual meeting. From broadcasting live from the Moving Wall to hosting game shows, WCTV had a busy year focusing on becoming more embedded in the community, said Executive Director Steve Ruiz.

One of the highlights of the year for WCTV was their work on the Vietnam Moving Wall in August, Ruiz said. WCTV organized the reading of 28,000 names on the wall to play as people walked along it. WCTV also broadcast each ceremony at the wall live.

The TV station hired seven interns for the summer and two of them are staying on part-time this fall. Christian Fernandes, WCTV's education coordinator, had another three interns.

"We've come huge leaps and bounds over what we used to do," Fernandes said. He's the Wareham School District's audiovisual advisor and teaches three video classes in the school. He said he's working on classes on how to properly use phones, webcams, microphones and streaming.

"Kids are not instructed on how to use technology the right way," Fernandes said.

Next year, he hopes to teach high school students how to be on a news broadcast and let them do their own news program.

An article on the fall Town Meeting agenda, if approved by voters, would allow the town to put the WCTV building, located at 505 Main St., up for sale.

Ruiz said WCTV plans to bid on the property. Owning the property would give the station "full control of the building" and allow the organization to go forward with plans for an addition on the building.

"We will save a fistful of money," Ruiz said.

Three open board seats were filled by Peter Barrows and Patricia Rumney, who were previously board members, and newcomer Rose Berry, who said her focus on the board will be particularly on reaching out to the senior community in Wareham.

"I just love the fact that it's a community TV station," said Berry, manager of Eastern Bank on Main Street. "That's what I am about."

Tom Worthen stepped down from his position on the board after three years.

The annual meeting also touched on the year's budget, $95,763 over budget for the year. WCTV had $1.6 million in total assets at the beginning of 2017.
