The post office on Main Street recognized a beloved employee of 30 years on Wednesday, thanking him for his continued role in the community with a small surprise party and a big cake.

Alan Macelhiney said that as a kid, he always wanted to work in a post office, and he has no plans of stopping after his first 30 years on the job. He’s going to keep at it for as long as he can.

“It’s you, you’re the face of the post office here in Wareham,” Post Office Operations Manager John Fitzpatrick told Macelhiney, witnessed by a group of community members.

Fitzpatrick said Macelhiney has plenty of fans in town. At Macelhiney’s appreciation party, a poster was hung up that displayed clippings from the Facebook page “Wareham Matters,” where many people had written positive comments about Macelhiney.

“It’s because of the way he interacts with the public,” Fitzpatrick said. “He takes pride in what he does and he goes the extra mile.”

Macelhiney said he’s happy to make an impact in people’s lives.

“I know what I do, but it’s nice to be appreciated,” he said.
