John McBride, Jr., 85

John E. McBride, Jr., 85, of Onset, formerly of Brighton died Oct. 24 at home. He was the husband of Margaret M. (Cardarelli) McBride and the son of the late John E. and Julia (FitzSimmons) McBride.

He graduated from St. Columbkille High School in Brighton. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War.

Mr. McBride was a teamster official for the Teamsters Local 25, Boston for many years before retiring. John was the consummate union spokesman. He tirelessly represented Teamsters Local 25 as their organizer and business agent for 15 years. Success was John’s mantra. Previously he worked as a truck driver for Hemingway Transportation in Boston.

He was active in the community and served as president of St. Columbkille Holy Name Society, was a Past Grand Knight of the Brighton Council #121 Knights of Columbus, a member of the Simon of Cyrene Society in South Boston and the St. Vincent De Paul Society. He served on several boards including the United Way of Mass Bay, Easter Seal Society, Teamsters Retirees Chapter, Wareham Gatemen, and the Teamsters Federal Credit Union. He was a communicant of St. Margaret’s Church in Buzzards Bay.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret M. (Cardarelli) McBride; two daughters, Maureen Amaral of Canton and Janet Smalley of Billerica; a son, John A. McBride of Brighton; two sisters, Mary Wilkins of Cape Neddick, Maine and Pauline Molanari of West Wareham; a brother, Joseph G. McBride of Hempstead, North Carolina; six grandchildren; one great granddaughter. He was predeceased by his son, Richard McBride and his brothers, William and Thomas McBride.

His Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 27 in St. Margaret’s Church, 141 Main St. Buzzards Bay. Burial will follow in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.

Visiting hours are from 9:30 - 11 a.m. on Friday at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway, (Route 28), Wareham.
