Hearing determines property tax rate will remain equal for all

Nov 15, 2017

A single tax rate for all property in Wareham will continue to be used for the upcoming year, Selectmen voted at a tax levy hearing on Tuesday.

The hearing determined whether the town would continue to utilize a single tax rate or to split the tax rate, which would shift the burden toward commercial and industrial properties, including offices and retail stores, manufacturing buildings and commercially zoned land.

For 2018, 82.3 percent of properties in Wareham are residential. Director of Assessment Jacqui Nichols advised against splitting the tax rate at the meeting, saying Wareham’s demographics are not conducive to this.

“Most of our businesses are still smaller businesses,” Nichols said.

With a unanimous vote from Selectmen, the single tax rate will continue to be utilized going forward, with all classes of property paying the same rate of $11.25 per $1,000 of assessed property value.
