Charlotte Baptista, 95

Charlotte “Lottie” (Lopes) Baptista, 95, of Onset died Dec. 28 at Tobey Hospital in Wareham. She was the wife of the late Antonio “Tony” R. Baptista and had been married for 62 years. He preceded her in death in July of 2005.

Born in Wareham on Nov. 8, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Christian and Anna (Texiera) Lopes.

Lottie worked at Aerovox in New Bedford for 43 years as a solderer. Her claim to fame was that she surpassed the piece-work quota and achieved her weekly bonus every pay period for those 43 years and was never “laid off.”

According to relatives and friends, she could keep up with any man picking cranberries, blueberries, and strawberries. She enjoyed traveling, movies, reading, crossword puzzles, find a word, Pokeno and the numbers. She was an excellent bookkeeper. She loved baseball, and the Yankees were her team. She enjoyed gardening and working on joint projects with her husband and maintaining their rental properties in Onset.

She is survived by her son, LeBaron R. Baptista of Leavenworth, Kansas; her grandchildren, LeBaron R. Baptista II and his wife Jen of Leavenworth, Kansas, Jeremy Ty Baptista of Cranston, Rhode Island, Kristin D. Baptista Jacob of Atlanta, Georgia; her great grandchildren, LeBaron R. “Trey” Baptista III, Langston Baptista, and a host of nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her son, the late Joseph R. Baptista; her brothers, the late Tony Lopes and William “Sonny” Lopes, her sister, the late Demeciana Gomes and her half-sister, the late Mary Rose.

Her funeral will be from the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway (Route 28), Wareham on Saturday, Jan. 6 at 9 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick’s Church, High St., Wareham at 10 a.m. Interment will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Wareham. Visiting hours will be Friday from 4 to 7 p.m.
