High school students consider outdoor classrooms, other popular suggestions
A better bathroom schedule, outdoor classrooms and a monitor displaying announcements are ideas the Wareham High School Student Advisory Committee is cooking up, and they discussed the plans that are brewing with the School Committee on Wednesday night.
The Student Advisory Committee is required by the state to meet with the school committee on a quarterly basis to fill them in on what’s going on at the high school, what students value and what they would like to see changed.
Representatives of the Student Advisory Committee Elizabeth Ruiz, a senior, and Jasmine Black, a sophomore, brought up several things students want to see changed around the high school. The advisory committee sent out a school-wide survey, asking students what they wanted, and chose the most achievable, practical items to tackle.
First is an outdoor classroom, which Ruiz said is a popular idea among students. The committee is working on getting permits for the outdoor classroom and finding suitable furniture. Students also requested a study hall period for International Baccalaureate and AP students.
Another common need from students was better communication. Black said they hope to have a monitor installed in the cafeteria that will display announcements so all students can stay informed.
Finally, an item that the Student Advisory Committee already addressed: an improved bathroom schedule. Since bathrooms are always monitored at the high school, they’re only open during certain times. Ruiz said there was a block of nearly two hours when the bathroom wasn’t open to students, but the committee was able to change that. Now, there is only a 30 minute period where students can’t access the bathroom during the day.
