Wareham Police have filed criminal charges against one juvenile accused of emailing a school shooting threat, which prompted a massive law enforcement response involving hundreds of officers on July 10.

Following an investigation by Wareham detectives, the juvenile, who has not been identified, was charged with: (communicating) a threat with serious public alarm. The threat was targeted toward students and faculty at Wareham High School and Middle School.

On July 10, Wareham Police officers and detectives, assisted by the Wareham Fire Department, school officials and several law enforcement agencies, including Massachusetts State Police and SEMLEC SWAT personnel, responded after school administrators alerted them to the anonymous email.

That day marked the start of summer classes. Students were evacuated to the Gleason Family YMCA where they were reunited with parents, some who were distraught over the situation.

Police said the email was received in the morning during summer school activities and it threatened "the use of a weapon to cause great harm."

The threat was unfounded and everyone involved was safely reunited with their family.

“I am proud of the efforts of the detectives involved in this case, whose relentless and diligent investigation clearly shows that Wareham PD did not rest until all measures were taken and probable cause to file a criminal charge was attained,” said Wareham Police Chief Kevin Walsh. “I also hope that our citizens, including our youth, realize the seriousness with which the Wareham Police Department and Wareham School Department address this type of matter.”

Arraignment procedures in the Juvenile Session at Wareham District Court are scheduled for Jan. 24.
