A Wareham teen accused of emailing a school shooting threat this summer is being held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing scheduled for Jan. 31.

The teen, who is not being identified, is charged with communicating a threat with serious public alarm. The threat targeted students and faculty at Wareham High School and Middle School on July 10, 2017, prompting a massive law enforcement response involving hundreds of officers.

July 10 marked the first day of summer classes, and students were evacuated to the Gleason Family YMCA where they reunited with family members, many distraught over the situation.

Wareham Police said the email was sent in the morning and threatened “the use of a weapon to cause great harm.” The threat proved to be unfounded.

The 17-year-old defendant was arraigned on Jan. 26 in Brockton Juvenile Court, said Beth Stone, a spokeswoman for the Plymouth County District Attorney’s office. Originally, the teen’s arraignment was scheduled for Jan. 24 in Wareham District Court. However, the arraignment was postponed and moved to Brockton because a Wareham juvenile court judge wasn’t available at the time.

The dangerousness hearing will determine whether or not the defendant poses a “substantial risk” of committing a felony using force.
