Wareham educators, students honor former first grade teacher

A somber, heartfelt memorial for former Decas Elementary School first grade teacher Denise Jop opened Wednesday’s School Committee meeting, attended by dozens of her colleagues and students.

“There’s a hole at Decas and one in Wareham Public Schools,” said fifth grade teacher Brian Fitzgerald. “It’s strange to think there’s not going to be someone in Mrs. Jop’s room.”

Jop passed away at the age of 50 on Jan. 30 after a brief illness. A Fairhaven resident, she started working at Decas 12 years ago. In that time, she inspired love and respect among students and staff.

“Her actions will have far-reaching effects for years to come,” said Superintendent Dr. Kimberly Shaver-Hood. “Her students will become future doctors, actors, athletes and educators. They will bring with them the lessons they learned from Denise.”
